Description

Avintol ® is a preparation of vinpocetine which increases cerebral metabolism by increasing glucose and oxygen utilization, improves cerebral microcirculation by inhibiting platelet aggregation,decreasing blood viscosity and promoting oxygen transport. It selectively and intensely increases cerebral blood flow and the share of the brain in the cardiac output, it reduces cerebral vascular resistance without affecting systemic circulation (blood pressure, heart rate, cardiac output, total peripheral resistance).

Indications

Avintol ® is indicated for the treatment of –

  • Acute and chronic cerebral circulatory insufficiency: Ischemic strokes, reversible ischemic neurological deficit (RIND), progressive stroke, completed stroke, post-apopleptic conditions, acutecirculatory disorder, hypertensive encephalopathy, acute cardiovascular disorder, cerebral arteriosclerosis, multi-infarct dementia, cerebral embolism etc.
  • Psychic or neurological symptoms of cerebral insufficiency: Memory disturbances slow thinking, lack of concentration, mood instability, aphasia, apraxia, dizziness, sleep disturbances, headache, vasovegetative symptoms of menopausal syndrome etc.
  • Ophthalmological disorders: Vascular disorders of the choroid and retina due to arteriosclerosis, vasospasm, macular degeneration, arterial or venous thrombosis or embolism, glaucomasecondary to above mentioned disorders.
  • Otological disorders: Impaired hearing vascular or toxic (iatrogenic) origin, presbyacusis, meniere's disease, cochleovestibular neuritis, tinnitus and dizziness of labyrinth origin.

Dosage and administration

Initial dose
The recommended initial dose is one to two tablets thrice daily with meals.
Maintenance dose
The recommended maintenance dose is one tablet thrice daily over long periods.


Use in pregnancy & lactation

Vinpocetine should not be used in pregnancy and lactation.

Precautions

Vinpocetine should be avoided in patients with probability of bleeding due to its anticoagulation effect and should be taken with caution in patients with hypertension or cardiac dysfunction.


Side effects
Vinpocetine is well tolerated. In some cases flushing, rashes, minor GI problems, transient hypertension and tachycardia may occur.

Contraindications

Avintol ® is contraindicated in patients with a hypersensitivity to vinpocetine or any of the exipients.


Drug interactions

Vinpocetine should not be used with any anticoagulants such as warfarin and heparin.
