Description

Dixxar ® syrup is an antitussive preparation of Dextromethorphan HBr, Pseudoephedrine HCl and Triprolidine HCl. Dextromethorphan is cough suppressant with central action on the cough center in the medulla. Pseudoephedrine mainly acts on α-adrenergic receptors and to a lesser extent beta adrenergic receptors. So it is an upper respiratory decongestant which produce its decongestant effect within 30 minutes and lasts at least 4 hours . Triprolidine provides symptomatic relief of common cold and allergic rhinitis.

Indications

Dixxar ® is indicated for

  • Symptomatic relief of allergic rhinitis
  • Upper respiratory tract disorders accompanied by non-productive cough which benefits from the administration of a nasal decongestant, a histamine H1 receptor antagonist and an antitussive combination.

Dosage and administration
Age Dixxar ® Syrup
Adult and children over 12 years 10ml or 2 teaspoonful 3 times daily
Children of 6-12 years 5ml or 1 teaspoonful 3 times daily
Children of 2-5 years 2.5ml or ½ teaspoonful 3 times daily  
Children below 2 years As directed by the physician

Use in pregnancy & lactation

There are no specific data on use of this combination during pregnancy. Caution should therefore be exercised by balancing the potential benefits of treatment of the mother against any possible hazards to the developing fetus.

Precautions

It should be used with caution in patients taking antihypertensive drugs, tricyclic antidepressants or other sympathomimetic agents. Caution also has to be taken in patients with severe hepatic or renal insufficiency.

Warnings
It should not be used for persistent cough which occurs with smoking, asthma, or emphysema or where cough is accompanied by excessive secretions unless directed by the physician. This combination may cause sedation or drowsiness. So it should be used with caution when driving or operating machinery.


Side effects
Side-effect of Dextromethorphan appears to be rare and may cause dizziness and GI disturbance. Side effects of Pseudoephedrine include symptomatic hyperactivity such as fear, anxiety, restlessness, tremor, confusion and irritability. Triprolidine may cause sedation.

Contraindications

It is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to Dextromethorphan, Psedoephedrine or Triprolidine severe hypertension or severe coronary artery disease. Contraindicated in persons under treatment with MAO inhibitors within 2 weeks.


Drug interactions

Concomitant use of Dixxar ® with sympathomimetic agents such as decongestants, tricyclic antidepressants, appetite suppressants and amphetamine-like psycho stimulants or with monoamine oxidase inhibitors which interfere with the catabolism of sympathomimetic amines may occasionally cause a rise in blood pressure. Pseudoephedrine of Dixxar ® may partially reverse the hypotensive action of drugs which interfere with sympathetic activity including guanethidine, methyldopa, alpha & beta-adrenergic blocking agents.

Presentation

Dixxar ® Syrup is a light amber colored, strawberry & banana flavored preparation. Each 5ml contains:

Dextromethorphan HBr BP : 10mg
Pseudoephedrine HCl BP : 30mg
Triprolidine HCl BP : 1.25mg
