Description

Doxamil® is the preparation of Doxylamine Succinate. It is an antihistamine which works by blocking the action of histamine. It also has hypnotic, anticholinergic, antimuscarinic, pronounced sedative & local anesthetic effects.

Indications

Doxamil® is indicated for the symptomatic relief of hypersensitivity reactions, in pruritic skin disorders & as a hypnotic in the short-term treatment of insomnia. It is also indicated for the symptomatic treatment of coughs & common cold.


Dosage and administration

For anti-histaminic purpose:

      The usual recommended dose is 25 mg every 4 to 6 hours up to a maximum dose of 150 mg daily.

For hypnotic & sedative purpose:

      The usual recommended dose is 25 mg at night. For sedating purpose it should be taken 30 minutes before going to bed.

Note: Doxylamine Succinate is not recommended for children under 12 years of age.


Use in pregnancy & lactation

Doxylamine Succinate is categorized as Pregnancy Category B. Doxylamine Succinate can be used for problems of insomnia in pregnancy if necessary. But safety should be ensured by talking to the doctor first.
Use of Doxylamine Succinate should be avoided during lactation. First generation antihistamines may inhibit lactation because of their anticholinergic actions. Small amounts of antihistamines are distributed in human breast milk. Use is not recommended in nursing mothers because of the risk of adverse effects, such as unusual excitement or irritability in infants.

Precautions

Precautions should be exercised for treatment of patients with breathing problems, a certain eye problem, heart problems, high blood pressure, liver disease, seizures, stomach problems, overactive thyroid, urination problems.


Side effects
Doxylamine Succinate may have some undesirable effects in certain individuals like dry mouth, nose and throat, drowsiness, nervousness, nausea, headache, increased chest congestion, excitement, blurred vision etc.

Contraindications

Doxylamine Succinate is contraindicated in patients who have known hypersensitivity or idiosyncrasy to Doxylamine Succinate or any of its components. Doxylamine Succinate should not be used in the following conditions: glaucoma, difficulty to urinate, emphysema or chronic bronchitis.

Overdose
Overdose of Doxylamine Succinate produces signs and symptoms of anticholinergic toxicity. Acute overdose may cause various reactions including large pupils, flushing, fever, hallucinations, weakness, shaking (tremor), muscle twitching, loss of consciousness, seizures. In children, excitement may occur first, and may be followed by loss of coordination, drowsiness, loss of consciousness, seizures.
