Preg-CI® is the combined preparation of Carbonyl Iron, Folic Acid and Zinc Sulfate Monohydrate. Carbonyl Iron is a highly purified form with smallest particle size, highest Iron content, a very high absorption potential and hence a higher bioavailability. Carbonyl Iron is essentially pure Iron unlike most other Irons which contain Iron salts such as Iron Fumarate and Iron Gluconate. Folic Acid is the synthetic form of Vitamin B9 which is essential for numerous bodily functions. Zinc is necessary for proper functioning of enzymes, which are involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins. Zinc facilitates wound healing, normal growth rates, normal skin hydration and maintains senses of taste and smell. It also helps in development of cell mediated immunity.

Preg-CI® is indicated for the treatment and prophylaxis of iron, zinc and folic acid deficiency especially during pregnancy and lactation. Preg-CI® is also indicated for the treatment of nutritional iron deficiency anaemia, patients with chronic inflammatory disease, patients who are taking NSAIDs for long period and patients with malabsorption syndrome.
The recommended dose of Preg-CI® is one capsule daily before food or as directed by the physician.
Use of this combination during the first trimesters of pregnancy should be avoided if possible. Thus administration of iron during the first trimesters requires definite evidence of iron deficiency. Prophylaxis of iron deficiency where inadequate diet calls for supplementary zinc and folic acid is justified during the remainder of pregnancy.
Special care should be taken in patient with iron overload states, such as haemochromatosis, haemolytic anemia or red cell aplasia. Failure to respond to the treatment requires further investigations to exclude other causes of anemia. In patients with renal failure there may be the risk of zinc accumulation.
This combination is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any components of this product.
Carbonyl iron may decrease the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics, quinolone antibiotics, levodopa, levothyroxine, methyldopa and penicillamine. Large amount of calcium decreases the absorption of zinc. Folic acid interacts with antiepileptics, so plasma concentrations of phenobarbital, phenytoin and primidone are possibly reduced.
