Description

Xcel ® Plus is a combined preparation of Paracetamol and Caffeine. Paracetamol has analgesic and antipyretic properties with weak anti-inflammatory activity. Caffeine is an alkaloid. By intermolecularassociation with paracetamol, caffeine increases the solubility and transmembrane permeation of paracetamol. In addition, caffeine increases the pain threshold and tolerance of pain.

Indications

Xcel ® Plus is indicated for the relief of headache, backache, toothache, migraine, rheumatic and muscle pain, neuralgia and menstrual pain. Xcel ® Plus also relieves aches and pains of colds and flu, sore throats and helps reduce temperature.


Dosage and administration

Adults, including the elderly and children 12 years and over: 1-2 tablets every 4 hours as required. Do not take more frequently than every 4 hours. Maximum dose is 8 tablets in 24 hours. Xcel ® Plus is not recommended for children under 12 years of age.


Use in pregnancy & lactation

Although there is epidemiological evidence of the safety of paracetamol in pregnancy and lactation, medical advice should be sought before using this product.

Avoid drinking too much tea, coffee and alcohol when taking Xcel ® Plus.


Side effects

In recommended doses, it is usually free from side effects. Skins rashes are reported in few cases. Caffeine may cause insomnia, nausea and headache.


Contraindications

Xcel ® Plus is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to paracetamol, caffeine or any other components of it. It is also contraindicated in patient with severe renal impairment and liver disease.

Warnings
Withdrawal effects may be seen in case of using this medicine in large amount or in case of using for a longer period.


Drug interactions

Paracetamol interacts with Phenobarbital or Phenytoin; acute ingestion of alcohol markedly reduced the metabolic activation of Paracetamol, Caffeine significantly interacts with Diazepam, Phenobarbitol, Cimetidine, lron and Alcohol.
